April 7 of each year is a date set aside to celebrate World Health Day. Since its inception, more than 50 years ago, this celebration has aimed to raise awareness on specific health issues as well as promoting healthier living habits.

This year’s edition aims at celebrating the work of nurses and midwives all over the world and reminding world leaders of the important role they play in making us healthier. As we celebrate the World Health Day this year by honouring nurses and midwives, we can acknowledge their contribution to our various communities by reminding ourselves of the importance of our physical health and the things we can do to maintain/improve it.

Importance of Physical Health and How to Maintain it

The importance of our physical health cannot be overemphasised. Once anything wrong happens to our health, it affects most of our daily activities. So, in order to ensure we are able to carry out our daily activities efficiently, we must do our best to maintain good physical health. This can be achieved by doing the following:

  1. Drink Lots of Water

A lot of people usually underestimate the importance of drinking lots of water on a daily basis. The adult body is made up of 60 per cent water and blood is 90 per cent water. This highlights the importance of staying hydrated to ensure our body systems function properly and also to enjoy an optimum performance.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is as important as eating a balanced diet and exercising. We should aim to sleep between 7 to 9 hours every night. Good sleep increases your energy levels, improves concentration and productivity, as well as your athletic performance.

  1. Good Personal Hygiene

Maintaining good personal hygiene will reduce your risks of infections, thereby, maintaining good physical health. Good personal hygiene habits include; washing your hands, trimming your nails, brushing and flossing your teeth, covering your mouth with a tissue or your elbow when coughing etc.

  1. Eat Healthily

Making sure you eat a balanced diet is so important for your physical health. In the end, “You are what you eat” and your output relies heavily on your input. Eat enough fruits, vegetables and incorporate healthy snacking into your diet.

  1. Physical Activity

You don’t need to spend hours in the gym in order to exercise. There are some workouts you can do in the comfort of your home such as; push-ups, sit-ups, planks etc. When possible, you can also take the stairs instead of the lift, take a walk in your neighbourhood or play with your kids.

Bonus Tip- Use SIXPAD Devices

You might be wondering, “How will SIXPAD devices help improve my physical health?” Take the Abs Belt for example. On the surface, you might think this device only helps you develop your six-pack muscles, but there are numerous benefits attached to having a strong core such as; improved body control and balance, improved protection of inner organs, reduced risks of injury etc. What’s more, you enjoy this from the comfort of your couch.
